Row count and risk setting, read as two ways of swapping the list

The two controls above a Plinko board do not adjust a payout. They select between price lists the operator has already written. Row count changes how many numbers are in the list; risk changes how far apart those numbers sit. Neither edits a single bin, and this page does not name either setting as the better one.

Two controls, one thing they both do

Above a Plinko board there are usually two controls: how many rows of pins the board has, and a risk setting with two or three named positions. They look like dials on the game.

Read from the bottom of the board, they are neither dials nor game controls. They are a menu.

Each combination of the two selects one published payout row from a set the operator has already written. Changing a setting swaps that row for a different one, in full, before the next release. Nothing about a single bin can be raised or lowered, and no combination produces a list the operator has not printed. What the row count fixes

The row count fixes the length of the list, and it does so by arithmetic rather than by design choice.

A ball crossing a row of pins leaves it one position to the left or one to the right of where it entered, so each row widens the range of landing positions by exactly one. Eight rows produce nine bins, twelve produce thirteen, sixteen produce seventeen.

That is why the row count is the setting whose effect is visible before anything else: the strip of numbers gets physically longer or shorter. It is also why a longer board does not simply spread the same numbers wider. A seventeen-bin list is a different list from a nine-bin one, written separately, with its own values.

What the risk setting fixes

The risk setting works at fixed length. The number of bins does not move, because that belongs to the row count; what moves is how far the outer values sit from the inner ones.

A lower setting produces a list whose numbers are closer together. A higher setting produces a list whose ends are further from its middle.

Both lists keep the same symmetry, the same bin count and the same largest-at-the-ends shape. In other words the risk setting does not change what kind of object the row is. It changes which of several published rows of that kind is currently in force.

Why this page names no winner

There is a version of this page on other sites that ends with a recommended combination. This one cannot, for a reason that is about data rather than about caution.

Comparing two configurations as choices requires a return figure published for each specific configuration. Our data has no such figure for any of the eleven operators in our table, because it has no game-level field of any kind: not a title, not a return, not a studio-by-game map. The setting that is not on the board

The one control that genuinely differs between operators is not a control at all: it is which operator the account is at.

The eleven sites in our table differ by permit authority, by whether that permit has a number in a public register, by which coins the cashier accepts and by how many countries the operator's own terms refuse — from 58 names down to one, with two lists nobody could read. Questions people actually type

What does the row count setting change?
The length of the payout row, and with it every number in it. A board of eight pin rows ends in nine bins, twelve rows in thirteen bins, sixteen rows in seventeen. Because the bins are the landing positions and every pin row adds exactly one, the count is fixed by arithmetic. Changing it does not stretch the existing numbers across more bins; it puts a different, longer list on screen.
What does the risk setting change?
The spread of the numbers, at a fixed row length. A lower risk setting produces a list whose values sit closer together; a higher one produces a list whose outer values are further from its inner values. The number of bins does not move, because that is set by the row count. As with the row count, the player is choosing between lists the operator published, not editing one.
Which combination of rows and risk is best?
